The inhibitory effect of extract from Ishige okamurai(brown algae, phaeohyta) on the adsorption of some oral streptococci to the tooth surface was investigated in vitro. The result showed that more than 95% of the adsorption of S. obrinus SL-1, S. sobrinus OMZ65, S. mitis, S. cricetus, S. gordonii, S. rattus, S. sanguis, and S. mutans to S-HA beads was inhibited by 0.5, 1, and 2% of Ishige okamurai extracts. The growth of S. sobrinus SL-1, S. sobrinus OMZ65, S. sanguis, S. cricetus, and S. gordonii were markedly inhibited by 1% extracts of Ishige okamurai. Also the growth of S. mitis and S. mutans were inhibited by 2% extracts of Ishige okamurai, but that of S. rattus is not.
